Smile Lines and Marionette Lines

Nasolabial folds, commonly known as ‘smile lines’  are a common sign of ageing that we all experience. Dermal fillers can be injected along the creases and lines of the face to fill them in thus removing the creases and improving the overall appearance of the face. You can be assured that overall you will appear more rejuvenated and have a smoother complexion.

Marionette lines, are long vertical lines that develop from the corners of the mouth to the chin as a result of the ageing process and other lifestyle factors. The skin around your mouth is thinner compared with the rest of your face, so it is particularly prone to wrinkling. Marionette lines are caused by a combination of collagen breakdown and loss of elastin that leads to the loosening of skin in the cheeks and lower part of the face.

By injecting dermal fillers below the corners of the mouth and along these lines, it lifts the smile and fills out any creases. Dermal fillers replace the lost volume in your face by hydrating and treating deep wrinkles and folds, improving your skin’s health and youthfulness for a natural look.

What causes fine lines and wrinkles?

One of the most important factors to prevent fine lines is smoking cessation; smoking breaks down collagen which leads to the development of line formations. Collagen is a structural component of the skin and its loss will cause the skin to lack plumpness and less youthful.

Additionally, wearing a good suncream can help slow down the ageing-effects that sun exposure can have on the skin. UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin which is what’s responsible for youthful looking skin. Finally, a good moisturiser will help plump the skin and any wrinkles/fine lines because dehydrated skin will exaggerate any lines and creases.

How long does filler last?

The longevity of dermal fillers depends on factors such as: Density of the filler, injection area and patient’s metabolism. Typically, fillers can last anywhere between 9-18 months. We usually expect facial dermal fillers to last longer (12-18 months) compared to lip fillers (6-12 months).

Can Dermal fillers be removed?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be quickly dissolved using an enzyme known as hyaluronidase. This acts to disperse hyaluronic acid, speeding up the natural breakdown of the dermal filler.

Will it hurt?

There may be slight discomfort whilst the dermal filler is being injected but we minimise this by applying an anaesthetic cream before treatment. Our fillers also contain local anaesthetic to provide further relief and alleviate as much pain as possible.

Are there any side effects?

Post treatment, it’s completely normal to experience swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness. These reactions are usually resolved within a few days. Cold packs can be helpful in reducing swelling. As a consequence of swelling, the product may feel harder or lumpy and you may notice some asymmetry. The final result may be judged at 2 weeks.

Am I suitable for dermal fillers?

A free consultation is mandatory before we administer any treatments here at MA Aesthetics. During your consultation we will discuss your current and previous health as well as your aesthetics concerns, expectations, side effects and the treatment process. This will help us to determine whether or not you are suitable for dermal fillers. However, generally speaking treatments cannot be administered if the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding; there is an active skin infection, including cold sores or if you are unwell – including sore throats, viral infections, colds, coughs or other illnesses. Additionally, if you have previous experience of anaphylaxis or severe allergic reactions, this will need to be discussed in detail. Please contact the clinic to discuss any illness or new medicines prior to attending.

Is there anything I need to prepare before my appointment?
  • No drinking 24 hrs before
  • Ensure you are well hydrated and have eaten healthily
  • All make up will need to be removed prior to treatment, so if you can please come ‘fresh faced’ if possible.
  • Alcohol, aspirin, Ibuprofen, blood thinners and a range of dietary supplements including St. Johns Wort, fish oils, Gingko Biloba, Vitamins C and E- may all contribute to bruising and are best avoided 24 hours before treatment

NB. If you are taking any prescribed blood thinning medication (anti-coagulants), please consult your doctor about contraindications.

Are there any side effects of dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers used by MA Aesthetics are all hyaluronic based and contain lidocaine (local anaesthetic) which can be dissolved at any point.

Common side effects at the injection site include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Redness
  • Soreness/Tenderness/Pain

NB: Bruising can be mild to severe depending on the injection site and individual. We have expert knowledge of the facial anatomy, but bruising cannot always be avoided. Swelling can be delayed but should subsite 2/3 days post treatment.

 Less common side effects:

  • Small lumps or irregularities at the injection site

Please do not hesitate to inform Molly if you have any side effects or concerns.

Is there any downtime?

There is some downtime associated with this procedure. Most people are able to resume normal activities with immediate effect, but this may vary depending on the individual’s reaction to the dermal filler. It is recommended to avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours post treatment as swelling, soreness and redness may be present.

We also recommend that you book any aesthetics treatments 2 weeks ahead of special events. This will ensure all swelling and bruising has gone so that you’re left with the final result.

Post treatment:

  • Avoid make up for 12 hours
  • Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours (increases swelling and bruising risk)
  • Avoid sunbeds and saunas for 2 weeks
  • Avoid Aspirin for 12-48 hours
  • Do not touch the injection areas as you may introduce bacteria and cause infection
  • Do not massage the treated areas and try to lie on your back during the night after your treatment. You may experience some tenderness, swelling and redness for a few days after treatment
  • Do not expose yourself to extreme movements, exercise or temperatures for 24 hours
  • Swelling, bruising and soreness are more prevalent with lip dermal fillers. These side effects may be exaggerated the next morning and the lips may appear uneven. This will subside through the day and is not a cause for concern

Swelling may worsen in the first 24 hours but should subside over the coming days. Cold packs can be helpful in reducing swelling. As a consequence of swelling, the product may feel harder or lumpy and you may notice some asymmetry but please don’t be concerned. The final result may be judged at 2 weeks when a review is conducted.

Bruising may take a few days to appear. Arnica can be helpful in clearing bruising. Tenderness should settle as swelling goes down.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns.

Please contact MA Aesthetics if redness, tenderness, itching or swelling worsens and discolouration (blanching) appears.

PLEASE NOTE: Hyaluronic Acid administration can result in anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) which in itself is life threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, difficulty swallowing, swelling of the tongue, eyelids, lips, stomach pain, nausea or diarrhoea. If you have any of the above symptoms, please report to your nearest A&E Department or call 999 for an ambulance.
